White People with Dreads - Bad

I was listening to Randi Rhodes on Air America and the conversation, for at least a good 30 minutes straight, was regarding dreadlocks on white kids. Apparently she created a stir in her audience the day before when she criticized a group of kids in Seattle at Hemp Fest who were sporting dreadlocks. She mentioned that they were dirty, lazy, and actively working to alienate themselves from the possibility of employment.

I personally do not believe that they were actively trying to undo any opportunity for securing a better future for themselves through undermining their chances at landing that fast-track marketing trainee position, but I do have to agree with Randi - White kids in dreadlocks look pretty bad. It is kids who are not secure with their identity going out and experimenting with things that, most of the time, they really don't understand. Sure, they might do a little research - whatever they read in the Bob Marley biography Catch a Fire - on a religious angle about dreadlocks. But really, most of the kids I've known through my life who have dreads - the white ones - just liked to get high. And that is fine too. You want to get high? Fine. You want to get dreads? Fine. Your white? Fine. But you look stupid and I'm not going to hire you. Why? Because I'm confined to cultural norms and you don't really know what you are doing.

So, Randi - while you did sound a little bit abrasive and it took you way too long to get to the identity issue when you were discussing it, I'm on your side.
